Our Story

Majica Outreach began with a simple realization: real change in the culture inside TDCJ starts with the people already there. So we decided to build it ourselves.

It started with Self Harm Prevention (SHPO), where Matthew Troell was part of the initial team working to shift the culture for men struggling with self-harm. The team found ways to make an impact directly; sponsoring an Experiencing God class, providing hygiene items for men in segregation, and bringing in board games and music equipment for the guys in the Self Harm program.

Around the same time, a fellow peer educator invited Matt to help teach a class to the G4 population. What became known as Perspectives grew into something the men looked forward to, and Majica sponsored their graduations as the class took shape.

Then Matt was transferred to a new unit, right in the middle of it all. Perspectives evolved into what is now the OMEGA Project, carrying that same spirit of peer-led change into a new home.

That's where Majica Outreach comes from: not a top-down program, but people inside the system doing what they could with what they had, and building something bigger than themselves in the process.

Today, we're taking that same work and opening it up. The guys inside have always been the catalyst for change; now we're building the bridge to bring people from outside the walls into that work alongside them, so the momentum doesn't stop at the gate.
